Perhaps you're an avid anime viewer or manga reader. Maybe you simply stumbled upon a shop at your local mall or a Japanese website that pictured these cute or attractive toys. Whatever the case may be, one thing is for sure: you have an interest in collecting anime figurines, statues, or toys. And trust me: you're not alone! But, many people outside of Japan have a hard time finding information on these collectors items. Perhaps you, yourself, have tried looking around for more information. Here, I will include a brief summary of the different types of anime statues that exist, and how you can get your hands on the best and newest ones!
Due to the popularity of these figures, many distributors have developed different kinds of statues. The first, and most popular type of anime figure, is known as a scaled PVC. These are simply statues made out of plastic. They are mass-produced by hand (with the help of molds), and are scaled to a certain size. The majority of these figures come in scales between 1/8th the size of an actual character, to 1/5th. Some statues can come as large as 1/4th (I've yet to come across anything larger than that)! When produced by a major manufacturer, these figures are very high in quality and detail. Their prices range, usually do to the size of the figure, anywhere from $70 up to $200 USD, or even more!
A second popular statue type is called cast-off. These are, more or less, the same as PVC scaled statues, except they have a little more to them. These statues have parts that are removable. Cast offs are more commonly made for hentai (perverted) figures, where swimsuits or clothing can be removed to reveal a bare character. However, that is not always the case! Some statues do have removable clothing, but do not reveal much more than pajamas, for instance. These figures range in price about the same as scaled PVC figures, although they may cost slightly more.
Another statue that is becoming more popular is called a nendoroid. Created by one of the major figure producers and distributors, Good Smile Company, nendoroids are petite versions of characters. Usually they come at about 4 inches tall, making them very small. They are created in a chibi style, with their heads usually about a third the size of the entire figure. What makes them unique is that their parts are interchangeable, and they can be moved into different poses. Usually, these figures come with other parts, such as other faces, arms, legs, or clothing. These pieces snap into the statue, making it easy to change them. Their joints are moveable as well, so you can move them into your favorite position! These toys are cheaper than the PVC scaled figures. They usually start from about $25USD and go to around $60USD (at most).
Similar to nendoroids, there are also figures called figmas. Produced by another popular company, Max Factory, these figures also have the joints that nendoroids have. So, these figures can also be moved to portray that epic battle scene you witnessed in your favorite anime. The difference, however, is that these are larger than nendoroids! They are created to be closer to the size of PVC statues. For this reason, they are a little more costly, usually between $40USD and $70USD.
The last type I will discuss are models kits. The most popular type are the Gundam models. These are simply statues that need assembly. Some are as simple as snapping pieces where they belong, while others can be more labor-demanding, and require glue, paints, accuracy, and talent. These aren't sold as commonly as the previous types, and are usually harder to obtain. Their price range varies greatly, and depends on the specific kit. Although, Gundam models tend to be on the cheaper side, anywhere from about $10 USD to $40 USD.
From nendoroids to figmas, cast-offs to the regular PVCs, the world of anime statues has a lot to offer. Many anime figure sales stores can be found online that offer support for English speakers. It's a very fun hobby, especially for fans of anime, manga, and Japanese culture. Happy collecting!
